CONS

The AI in the game is relatively weak and may not provide enough challenge

The game cannot compare with "Civilization V" in terms of graphics and sound effects, which may disappoint players who pursue a high-quality visual experience

An open-source reimplementation of the most famous civilization-building game ever - fast, small, no ads, free forever!

Build your civilization, research technologies, expand your cities, and defeat your foes!

About the Game

Unciv is an open-source, mod-friendly 4X turn-based strategy video game for Android, Windows, and Linux. It is a free reimplementation of Sid Meier's Civilization V—a game published by Firaxis Games in 2010—and was made with LibGDX. Unciv was developed by Yair Morgenstern and other volunteers since 2018 and is available as a free download. The aim of the project is to recreate the game mechanics of the original as accurately as possible

The game can be played in single player mode against AI opponents or, in cross-platform multiplayer mode, against human opponents. Also included is a map editor and an interface for mods .

The game has been in developed since 2018 on Github and uses the Kotlin programming language, relying on the platform-independent Java framework LibGDX. The source code and all assets are under a free license, according to the Mozilla Public License 2.0. By the beginning of 2024, over 460 volunteer developers and translators had contributed to the project The Android version is available on Google Play and F-Droid and is regularly updated. The PC version is available on Github and itch.io, and the Linux packages are available on Flathub and AUR. A release on Steam was planned, but was rejected by the platform operator.

Unciv is one of the best free Android games without advertising and microtransactions. The touchscreen operation is well implemented. As the playing field largens with the game's progression, a tablet is recommended for playing. Despite the similarities in gameplay, Unciv stands out visually from its role model with its simple, two-dimensional graphic style Google Play recorded more than one million downloads for Unciv by February 2024.

Tips and Tricks

Unciv is a strategy game that requires patience, planning, and creativity. Here are some tips and tricks that can help players achieve success:

1. Explore the terrain: It is essential to scout the surrounding territories to find resource-rich and defensible locations. Exploring unknown territories can help players discover new civilizations or locate resources that are vital for progress.

2. Manage resources: The game involves balancing multiple resources, such as food, gold, and culture. It is essential to manage these resources and prioritize which ones to prioritize based on the current strategy.

3. Expand wisely: Expanding the empire is necessary to gain more resources and spreading influence. However, expanding too fast can be detrimental, as it can stretch resources thin and make cities vulnerable to attacks.

4. Build defenses: Defense is crucial as the empire grows. Players should construct walls, forts, and other defensive buildings to protect their cities from incoming attacks. Defensive units such as archers, cavalry, and artillery are essential for fending off invasions.

5. Research technologies: Technology is fundamental for progress in Unciv. Investing culture points to research new technologies can unlock powerful units, buildings, and unique abilities that can turn the tide of battles.

6. Focus on victory conditions: Players should focus on one or two victory conditions and develop strategies that align with the chosen conditions. For example, if the chosen victory condition is a cultural one, then investing in culture-related technologies and buildings will be essential.

The world awaits! Will you build your civilization into an empire that will stand the test of time?

Oh, this game is fantastic! It's got all the elements of those civilization-type games like resources, trading, upgrading units, and advancing in science. And it all flows so smoothly—the best I've seen in free games like this! The AI opponents don't seem too tough, but then again, I've only played at the "Warlord" difficulty level for now. The games can be pretty long because they're so epic in scope! I do agree with another reviewer who suggested having a full-screen minimap. It would make navigating easier. Also, it would be great if the descriptions of civilizations from the setup screen were included in the Civilopedia. That way, you could learn about the special traits of each random civilization you play with.

Wow, this game is just fantastic! It may not be the most visually appealing, but it's so functional (I really enjoy its basic appearance). All the civilization mechanics are present, and some elements are even easier to understand than in the PC version. The developers did an incredible job, and I can already tell I will spend a lot of time playing this... Also, believe it or not, the entire game (without any modifications) is less than 40mb in size right now, which feels unbelievable considering how many apps nowadays exceed 200mb in size...

I love this game! It's so exciting. Sometimes, in the late stages of the game, the screen looks a bit crowded with all the units and resources shown, but it's still incredible. I am eager to see what more is in store! One thing that could be better is that you can't withdraw units from "explore" until they finish exploring or encounter an enemy unit (the automation for workers faces the same problem at present). It might just be an issue on my part, and there might be workarounds. Overall, it's a fantastic game!

Wow, playing Civilization 5 Gods and Kings on my phone is almost like the PC version! It's so cool that it's free. Even though controlling units in long wars can be a bit tricky on mobile, I don't blame the app for that, it's just the nature of a complex game like this on a touchscreen. Huge thanks and kudos to the developers for making this possible!

This is like a perfect copy of Civilization V that works flawlessly on your phone. You can switch between apps, keep it running in the background, and play without any problems. It runs really smoothly, has no ads, and the controls are great. It's basically Civ V but for free on your phone. If you're a fan of Civ V, you should definitely check this out. I wish I could donate to support the developer because they did an amazing job.
